The double caraffes has been sold also separately so there is the possibility of finding it, from a flea market even. I once succeeded finding a yellow middle part for 23 €. After this I ended up searching in all the second hand vintage store in Turku and finding a glass top by Nuutajärvi (for 10€) and a signed lower part in clear glass (350 €). This put together amounts to 400 €, so it was quite a catch, wouldn’t you say?

The Art of Glass -book tells us that the year 1957 is regarded as a turning point in Kaj Franck´s work as a designer. Traided in the spirit of 1930s functionalism, he found it easy after the war to choose his principles of design – simplicity of form, practicality and social responsibility. Simblification, however, cannot be continued endlessly, for form will be simplified to non-existence. Towards the end of the 1950s, art glass by Kaj Franck became easier to produce.

The double caraffes called Kremlin Bells were shown in the Milan Triennal in 1957. Kaj Franck was awarded Grand Prix for his design production. The caraffes illustrate well the change in Franck´s design that took place around 1957. The extreme simplicity seemed to be now past.

The caraffes were designed as household glass, but were soon taken into production as art glass.

PIC 1. Kaj Franck: Kremlin Bells, KF1500, Kremlin kellot. Decanter, two stacking parts, several colour combinations, 100 cl.
