It’s hard to explain. Maybe it’s because us Finns have always had these iconic dishes at our table. They have been present in our everyday-lives as well as in special occasions.

The first Kilta-dish that I bought was probably the jam jar with a rattan handle by Ulla Procopé. I bought it in 2000 for 60 Fmk. With this I had a revelation – Kaj Franck hadn’t designed the entire set and in fact Kilta was the name used for the basic set of dishware that was completed with these extra pieces. This first blog concentrates on the first steps of Kilta. In the following one I will focus on the colours of Kilta and on extra pieces with rattan. The third one will be on condiment sets.

When starting to work for Arabia first thing that Kaj Franck did was gather a well-functioning group of professionals. After this he began to get accustomed to working with new material, ceramics, and learning to know the varying ways to work with it. The process of renewing the dishware was started by the design of new set of dough bowls and a container for cream. The management of the factory wished for him to continue redesigning the traditional Swedish porcelain tableware, but Franck was persistent with his wish to design something totally different. He refused to design extensive, heavily decorated tableware but instead created a new, simple, practical and easily produced set, namely Kilta, that even the lesser wealthy population could afford. in the beginning the management was far from satisfied but finally Kilta made its way into production in the year 1953. However, it took a while until the customers actually found it.

”I also made such things, but if I hadn´t made the Kilta series against the wishes of the management, then I woud have remained a nobody to the end of my days who just did what he was told to do.” Franck admitted in an interview the year before his death in October 1988. (Kaj Franck: Designer, WSOY)

Kaj Franck started to design Kilta as early as 1948. The basic forms of a circle, cone, rectangular and a cylinder were at the basis of the design. The material was hard faience. In an interview in the magazine “Kaunis koti” a year later he asked people to “smash the services” Franck´s early manifesto appeared in an article entitled Kauneutta etsimässä (Searching for beauty) written for the home magazine Kaunis koti in 1949. Urging people to think about ”the original functions of household articles”, which now required quite different materials and shapes. In place of the former complete services a range had to be created form which pieces could be purchased according to one´s need.

PIC 1. Kaj Franck: Kilta (BA the Guild) tableware. The pitcher with its tight-fitting cork could be used for carrying, storing and serving. You could take it with you to the dairy and it would hold two decilitres of cream. The slim piece could be kept cool in the gap between double-glazed windows. The beautiful object could then be set on the table anytime for use as a creamer.
